Windows: HandBrake (
http://handbrake.fr/) is a killer tool for ripping DVDs and converting videos to friendly formats. Its interface, though, is a bit imposing to first-time users, at least on Windows. VidCoder builds on HandBrake's core powers and adds pared-down menus and options.
In other words, VidCoder does everything HandBrake does, in terms of grabbing video files off a DVD, converting them for your iPod, PSP, or simple laptop viewing, and implementing subtitles, chapter break-ups, and other customizations. The interface, too, does seem a little more elegant than the kitchen sink of HandBrake. Take a look for yourself. First, here's HandBrake with the first disc of Sports Night inside

Two caveats for VidCoder, though: It requires Microsoft's .NET 4.0 framework installed, which even a Windows 7 installation might not have by default. It also claims to need a separate DVD decrypter installed to work on commercial DVDs (like the aptly named DVD Decrypter), though it seems to load up DVDs just the same as HandBrake in my little test.
